Steber took a step back and shot the approaching Eye, point blank in the chest. The thing screamed, but its cry quickly turned into a wet gurgle as it died. Now turning back to Porter, Steber could see that the creature was clutching onto his friend's back, in an attempt not to be shaken off. Steber tried to shoot, but held his fire as Porter's body came between him and the Eye. Porter screamed as one of the Eye's claws sunk into his thigh and the other groped for the rocket launcher, stowed on the marine's back. Still trying not to be thrown off, the Eye squeezed its hand around the launcher, inadvertently discharging the weapon. A second later, a miniature rocket exploded between the two bodies, spraying blood and body parts everywhere. Porter's remains mixed with that of the Eye's yellow insides, creating a grotesque mess that resembled a splattered pumpkin.

Having witnessed this, Steber legs immediately felt about as strong as rubber bands and he dropped to the floor, vomiting. As he tried to get back on his feet, he felt cold claws grip around his throat. Like icy hands of death, they began to squeeze and Steber felt nails sink into the soft flesh of his neck. As more of the creatures piled onto him, Steber couldn't even see the walls of the room anymore. The world was just a swarming mass of screeching bodies. His last thought was one of seething hatred for Cray and the rest of scientists, whose actions had brought this wave of terror to Phobos.
